Understanding Dementia Part 1

This self-paced (4 hours) asynchronous course is designed for RCFE administrators and direct care staff, meeting continuing education requirements for dementia care certification. The course provides a comprehensive overview of dementia types, stages, and behaviors, emphasizing evidence-based, person-centered care strategies to effectively manage behaviors and create safe, dementia-friendly environments. Participants will engage with updated California Health and Safety Code provisions and Title 22 regulations governing dementia care.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Define dementia and distinguish it from other cognitive impairments such as age-related decline, delirium, and depression.
  • Identify common types of dementia and understand their progression through the three major stages.
  • Recognize early warning signs of dementia and the role of early diagnosis in effective care planning.
  • Implement person-centered care strategies to manage dementia-related behaviors, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
  • Ensure compliance with California-specific laws and regulations, including medication management, dementia training, and safety protocols in RCFE.
  • Support families and caregivers in understanding dementia progression and managing expectations.

The teaching methods included the use of various eBooks, video resources, PDFs, and PowerPoint presentations, along with accompanying question-and-answer sections. Upon completion of the course, key points and references were made available in PDF format for students to refer to post-class and apply in their business.
