The IMS Tightrope: What You Can Do vs. What Will Get You Cited

This course provides residential care administrators, licensees, and caregivers with a comprehensive, regulation-focused guide to understanding the boundaries of allowable and restricted services in residential care environments. With a primary focus on California’s Title 22, but with relevance to national and federal standards, the curriculum demystifies Incidental Medical Services (IMS) and clarifies the legal distinctions between services you may provide, those requiring special exceptions, and those that will result in citations or facility closure. Participants will examine real-world case studies, learn to interpret and apply Title 22 CCR §87464 (Allowable Conditions), §87465 (Restricted Conditions), and §87468 (Incidental Medical Services), and develop robust admission agreements and documentation systems that withstand regulatory scrutiny.

The course is designed for administrators, caregivers, and compliance professionals in RCFEs and similar settings who must make daily decisions about resident admissions, care boundaries, and communication with families. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to confidently navigate regulatory gray areas, respond effectively to family and resident requests, and ensure their facility’s practices align with both state and federal requirements, minimizing risk and maximizing resident safety.
