Self-Care and Secondary Trauma Prevention

This course is designed for direct care staff working in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs) and similar therapeutic care environments. Caregivers in these settings often support youth who have experienced trauma, which can lead to compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary trauma among staff. The course provides practical tools and knowledge to help caregivers recognize early warning signs of stress and trauma exposure in themselves and their peers. Participants will learn effective self-care strategies, how to access and utilize professional support systems, and the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries while providing intensive support to youth.

The training is grounded in current California Title 22 regulations for STRTP caregivers and aligns with federal standards from CMS, OSHA, HIPAA, ADA, and SAMHSA. The course emphasizes real-world application, including stress management techniques, peer support, and the creation of personal self-care plans. By the end of the course, caregivers will be better equipped to care for themselves, maintain professional effectiveness, and provide high-quality, compassionate care to youth in therapeutic settings.
