Psychotropic medications are the most prescribed drug class in California ARF settings — and the most legally dangerous to mismanage. This 2-hour course provides ARF administrators with the medication knowledge they need to exercise meaningful oversight of psychotropic prescribing in their facility: common psychotropic medication classes (antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, antidepressants, anxiolytics, seizure medications), basic pharmacodynamics and drug interaction principles as they apply to the ARF population, the legal distinction between therapeutic use and chemical restraint under Title 22, and the documentation and consent requirements that must precede administration. Administrators will learn the emergency authorization exceptions under Title 22 § 83075, how to identify warning signs of over-medication or polypharmacy, and when to advocate with prescribing physicians on a resident's behalf. The California AB 1172 (2025) seizure medication action plan requirements are integrated throughout. This course does not train administrators to prescribe — it trains them to protect. COK Area: Medication — Psychotropic, Drug Interactions, Chemical Restraints, Pharmacodynamics.
