Medication Management in Therapeutic Settings

This course provides essential training for caregivers and direct support staff working in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs) who are responsible for supporting youth prescribed psychiatric medications. The curriculum is designed to address the unique challenges of medication management in therapeutic settings, focusing on practical skills and regulatory compliance. Participants will learn about commonly prescribed psychiatric medications, how to recognize and respond to side effects, and the importance of monitoring and documentation. The course emphasizes the caregiver’s role in supporting medication compliance while respecting youth autonomy and addressing concerns or resistance in a compassionate, person-centered manner.

Caregivers will also gain strategies for educating youth about their medications in age-appropriate ways, fostering understanding and trust. The training aligns with current California Title 22 regulations specific to STRTPs and incorporates best practices from federal guidelines, ensuring staff are prepared to communicate effectively with treatment teams and coordinate with prescribing professionals. This course is intended for direct care staff only, providing clear, actionable guidance to enhance the safety, well-being, and empowerment of youth in residential therapeutic care.
