Medication Assistance and Safety Protocols

This course provides direct care staff in residential care settings with the essential knowledge and skills needed to safely assist residents with medications. Focusing on California’s Title 22 regulations for RCFEs, the training covers the legal scope of medication assistance, including what tasks caregivers can and cannot perform. Participants will learn best practices for accurate medication documentation, secure storage, and proper handling to prevent errors and protect resident safety.

The course also addresses how to identify and respond to common medication side effects and adverse reactions, ensuring timely intervention and communication with healthcare professionals. Special attention is given to procedures for handling refused or missed doses, always upholding resident rights and dignity. Designed for caregivers, this course uses clear language, practical examples, and real-world scenarios to build confidence and competence in medication management, supporting both regulatory compliance and person-centered care.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods will include the use of multiple video presentations, ebook, and PDF accompanying question/answer sections. Upon completion of the course, key points and references are available in a PDF format for students to refer to post-class and use in their business. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of each course.

Method of Course Evaluation by Participants: 

There will be a required course evaluation form before a certificate is awarded.

Method of Evaluating Participants:

For each credit hour, there will be 4 quizzes consisting of 5 questions each pertaining to the testing of knowledge of the module.
