Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the basic concepts of communication, including the sender-receiver model, encoding, and decoding.
  • Identify and apply the ten (10) rules of active listening to improve communication with residents, families, and colleagues.
  • Explain the significance of content and context in communication, as well as how non-verbal cues can influence message interpretation.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, including eye contact, gestures, and body posture, in an RCFE setting.
  • Recognize cultural differences in communication and adapt accordingly to respect the diverse backgrounds of residents.
  • Develop strategies for communicating with residents' families in a professional, clear, and empathetic manner.
  • Apply conflict resolution techniques to address communication challenges and resolve conflicts in a positive manner.
  • Understand the ethical and legal considerations in communication, including confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and resident rights regulations.
  • Utilize technology to improve communication in the RCFE while adhering to privacy and legal standards.
