Renew Your RCFE Certificate Without Losing Two Workdays: Evening and Weekend Live Hours That Fit a Working Administrator

You run a facility. That means the hardest part of renewing your RCFE administrator certificate is rarely the coursework — it is finding two days when you can disappear from the building. Residents still need care, staff still need supervision, and families still call. A renewal format that demands two full days away, back to back, asks you to solve a staffing problem before you can solve a compliance problem.

There is a better order. The 20 live hours your renewal requires do not have to arrive as a marathon. They can arrive the way your week actually works: an evening here, a weekend session there, with a real instructor, in real time, and a makeup path if life intervenes.

What California actually requires

California RCFE administrators renew every two years with 40 hours of continuing education from a CDSS/ACB-approved vendor, through CDSS-approved courses. At least 20 of those hours must be live — in person or live-streamed, instructor-led — and at most 20 may be self-paced online. Inside the 40, at least 8 hours must cover dementia care and at least 4 hours must cover laws, regulations, and resident rights.

That split is the whole planning problem. The self-paced 20 can be done at midnight, between shifts, or on a quiet Sunday. The live 20 run on fixed dates, with a real instructor, in real time — and they are the hours administrators discover too late, when the remaining live seats are full and the expiration date is not moving.

Book the live half first — in a format you can actually attend

Here is the strategy that works for administrators who are still on the floor every day: book the live half first, then fill the self-paced half around it. And when you compare live options, compare the calendar, not just the price.

Ask three questions before you enroll in any live renewal:

1. Does it run in the evenings or on weekends? Evening sessions after the day shift and weekend sessions that do not swallow your whole week are the difference between attending and rescheduling.
2. Is it spread out, or stacked? Six shorter sessions across ten days let you stay on the floor between sessions, handle what comes up, and come back fresh. Two 10-hour days in a row demand a coverage plan you may not have.
3. What happens if you miss a session? A renewal format with free makeups in a future cohort is a format that survives real life. A format with no makeup path turns one sick day into a lost renewal.

If a live option cannot answer all three, you are not buying a schedule. You are buying a scheduling problem.

The mandatory mix, without the scramble

The 8 dementia hours and 4 laws-and-regulations hours are not optional extras — they are inside the 40, and they are the hours administrators most often discover missing at filing time. A complete renewal package covers them by design, not by accident. Before you pay, check that your package names them: dementia care, laws and regulations, and resident rights, mapped to your certificate type, with certificates that show the approval, the hours, and the format (live or self-paced) for each course.

And check the clock on your self-paced hours. Some online packages expire access after a short window, which turns a renewal you meant to finish into a renewal you have to re-buy. Hours that stay available until you finish them are worth more than hours with a deadline attached.

One vendor for every certificate you hold

Many administrators hold more than one certificate, or run more than one facility type. A vendor that covers RCFE, ARF, GH, and STRTP lets you renew across types in one place, with one account, one certificate file, and one support team — instead of assembling a renewal from four different vendors on four different schedules. If you operate across types, breadth is not a luxury. It is the difference between one renewal and four.

The November - January 2027 window is open

The next live cohort runs November 10–19, with 20 live hours across 6 sessions: Tuesday evenings, Thursday evenings, and Saturday/Sunday daytime sessions, led by live instructors, with free makeups in a future cohort if you miss a session. A December 1–10 cohort follows for administrators whose window falls later in the year. Book the live half now, while seats are open and the dates still work around your facility — then complete your self-paced hours on your own schedule, before the December 31 renewal wave fills the remaining seats.

Your certificate does not require you to leave your building for two days. It requires 40 approved hours, in the right split, with the mandatory topics covered. Choose the format that fits the job you already do every day, and the renewal takes care of itself.
