Your ICTP Can't Renew You: RCFE Renewal Rules
Your ICTP Can't Renew You
You finished your 80-hour initial training, passed the exam, and earned the certificate. Two years later the renewal notice arrives, and the most natural assumption in the world is the one that gets administrators in trouble: that the training that got you certified counts toward staying certified. It does not. CDSS says it plainly on its renewal page — initial certification training program (ICTP) courses cannot be used to satisfy training requirements for administrator certificate renewals. Your ICTP was the door in. Renewal is a separate bucket, and it only fills with continuing education training program (CETP) hours earned during your certificate's active period.
The recipe for an RCFE renewal is 40 CETP hours every two years, and the split matters as much as the total. At least 20 of those hours must be in an ACB-approved live format — a real class, in real time, with an instructor — and up to 20 may be self-paced. At least 8 hours must be in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and at least 4 hours in laws, regulations, policies, and procedural standards for RCFE. A few more rules catch people by surprise: CDSS will not accept more than 10 hours of instruction in a single day, the same specific course counts only once per renewal period, and home-study or correspondence-type courses do not count at all. Hours earned before your certificate was issued do not count either. If your certificate has already expired, you can still renew within four years — but past four years, there is no renewal; you start the certification process over with a new ICTP.
So audit your hours against the recipe, not just the total. Pull every certificate you have earned since your current certificate took effect, sort them into live versus self-paced, and check the dementia and laws hours separately — those two buckets are where most shortfalls hide. If you are short on live hours, that is the gap to close first, because live hours are the ones you cannot cram at the last minute: a live cohort runs on a schedule, and the next one starts soon. File your renewal application (LIC 9214) up to 90 days before expiration with the $100 processing fee, and keep every certificate on file — CDSS asks for evidence of all 40 hours. The administrators who renew without drama are not the ones who trained hardest at the start. They are the ones who kept the two buckets separate from day one.
123CEU's 40-Hour CEU Re-Certification Package is built for exactly this split — 20 live CEU hours in the monthly live cohort plus 20 self-paced hours, with the dementia and laws/regs requirements covered. In the live sessions, a real instructor teaches and answers your questions in real time — not a recording. More at 123ceu.com.
