Done With the Live 20? How to Finish Your RCFE Renewal With the Self-Paced Half
You finished the live weekend. Two long days on Zoom, certificate in hand, and the hardest scheduling part of your renewal is behind you. Here is the part nobody tells you on the checkout page: you are only halfway done — and the second half has rules of its own.
The most common mistake after a live weekend
The renewal math, in full
California requires RCFE administrators to complete 40 hours of continuing education every two years to renew certification. At least 20 of those hours must be live — in person or live-streamed, instructor-led. Up to 20 hours may be completed through self-paced online courses from a CDSS-approved vendor. Inside the 40, at least 8 hours must cover Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and at least 4 hours must cover laws, regulations, policies, and procedural standards for your facility type.
The live weekend covers the first half. The self-paced half is yours to finish on your own schedule — but it still has to be real, approved coursework, and it still has to add up to 40.
The rule that catches people: 10 hours a day, maximum
The Administrator Certification Bureau will not accept more than 10 hours of instruction completed in a single day. That cap is why a live weekend runs two 10-hour days instead of one 20-hour day — and it is why a 40-hour renewal cannot be crammed into a single weekend, no matter how motivated you are. Four days is the floor: two live days plus at least two days of self-paced work, spread out.
If your certificate expiration is close, count backward from the deadline with that cap in mind. An administrator expiring December 31 who has done nothing yet needs four separate days of coursework before the deadline — not one heroic weekend. Start the self-paced half now, while the live weekend is still fresh, and the arithmetic stops being stressful.
What to check before you buy the self-paced half
Not every online course counts. Before you pay, confirm four things:
- The vendor is CDSS-approved for RCFE renewal. Your hours only count if the vendor holds ACB approval. Confirm the vendor number before you enroll, not after.
- The courses carry approval numbers. Each course on your certificate should show its CDSS approval number. Keep every certificate — the renewal application asks for the hours, and a missing certificate at filing time is how renewals stall.
- The mandatory mix is covered. If your live weekend already covered the 8 hours of dementia and the 4 hours of laws and regulations, your self-paced half can be any approved topics. If it did not, your self-paced courses must fill those gaps first — check your live certificate's topic breakdown before you choose.
- The hours fit your calendar. Self-paced means on your schedule, but the 10-hour daily cap still applies. A 20-hour self-paced bundle is two or three evenings of real work, not one sitting. Plan it the way you would plan any other deadline: in sessions, with a finish date before your expiration date.
The most common mistake after a live weekend
Waiting. Administrators finish the live 20 feeling done, set the self-paced half aside, and discover in the final week that the second half still needs two or three sessions they no longer have time for. The live weekend is the hard part to schedule; the self-paced half is the easy part to forget. Do the easy part first — while the renewal is still top of mind — and the certificate expiration stops being a countdown.
