Census Is Revenue: RCFE Marketing Tips for Administrators
Census Is Revenue: RCFE Marketing Tips for Administrators
In a six-bed home, one empty bed is a sixth of your revenue — and the mortgage, insurance, food, and payroll don't shrink with it. Most California RCFEs are small homes: roughly 8 in 10 are licensed for six or fewer beds. In a 100-bed campus, a vacancy is a rounding error. In your building, it's the difference between a comfortable month and a tight one. RCFE census isn't a corporate metric. For a small-home California RCFE administrator, it's the business.
Families don't choose a care home from a brochure. They choose on trust, and trust is built in the first ten minutes. Answer the phone like a person, not a voicemail — families usually call three or four homes and tour the one that called back first. Show them care in action on the tour: a caregiver who knows a resident's name and routine, a dining room that smells like lunch, a resident who looks settled. Follow up within 24 hours, while the visit is still fresh. And remember your compliance record is now part of your RCFE marketing: the CCLD public portal makes your citation history searchable, so the reputation you build in surveys is the reputation families see before they ever call.
Treat marketing like a med pass — a short routine, same time every week. Thirty minutes: call one referral source (a hospital discharge planner, a hospice nurse, a home-care agency) just to check in; follow up with one family who toured but hasn't decided; share one honest photo of daily life in your home, with permission; and check that your Google Business Profile is current. Write down where every inquiry came from so you know what's actually working. You don't need a marketing department. You need a habit — and in a small home, the administrator is the marketing department.
