This comprehensive, self-paced 4-hour course is designed for RCFE administrators, licensees, and direct care staff seeking advanced training in dementia-compliant environmental safety. Aligned with California Title 22, Health & Safety Code §1569, and AB 1570/663, this course focuses on practical, room-by-room strategies for creating safe, dignified, and regulation-ready care environments for residents living with dementia.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify room-by-room environmental risk factors that impact resident safety and dementia progression. Learners will analyze physical layout, lighting, and sensory stimuli per Title 22 standards.
  • Demonstrate how to implement CDSS-required documentation tools for oversight and incident prevention. Participants will use walkthrough logs, temperature charts, and corrective action forms effectively.
  • Apply dementia-specific supervision protocols across bedrooms, bathrooms, and shared zones. Learners will define zone-based coverage and staff accountability aligned with §87411.
  • Differentiate between safe and non-compliant tools, equipment, and restraint-related practices. Participants will evaluate tool usage using HSC §1569.696 and AB 1570 training guidelines.
  • Develop a facility-wide environmental compliance system supported by DPO (Dementia Plan of Operation) updates and staff training. Learners will integrate coaching, QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement)  tracking, and caregiver feedback into environmental oversight.
