Dementia in the RCFE Setting: From ISP Development to End-of-Life Planning

This self-paced, 4-hour asynchronous course is designed specifically for RCFE administrators and licensees seeking advanced continuing education in dementia care. Aligned with Title 22, Division 6, Chapter 8 and the California Health & Safety Code (§1569), this training delivers a comprehensive, regulatory-focused approach to dementia care planning and oversight within residential care settings.

Across 7 structured modules, participants will explore:

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Differentiate between types, stages, and symptoms of dementia to support accurate assessments and individualized care in the RCFE setting.
  • Develop, implement, and revise Individualized Service Plans (ISPs) based on cognitive decline, behavioral changes, and functional needs.
  • Apply person-centered, non-pharmacologic approaches as the first-line response to dementia-related behaviors, per AB 1570 and Title 22 requirements.
  • Navigate family dynamics and communicate effectively with care partners, especially during behavioral episodes, ISP reviews, and end-of-life transitions.
  • Coordinate hospice and end-of-life care within regulatory scope, including proper use of palliative supports, CDSS notifications, and documentation protocols.
  • Ensure full compliance with California Title 22 and Health and Safety Code §1569, including AB 2171 (resident rights) and AB 1387 (informed consent)
  • Fulfill mandated continuing education for dementia certification and strengthen leadership in dementia program oversight as an RCFE administrator.
