Therapeutic Milieu and Treatment Environment

This course is designed for direct care staff working in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTP) in California. It provides foundational knowledge and practical strategies for creating and maintaining a therapeutic milieu that supports youth treatment goals and positive behavior change. The course emphasizes the importance of daily routines, structured environments, and intentional interactions as key elements of effective milieu therapy. Caregivers will learn how to model appropriate social skills, facilitate healthy peer relationships, and use everyday situations as therapeutic opportunities. The training is grounded in current Title 22 regulations and aligns with federal standards, ensuring compliance while focusing on real-world caregiving tasks.

Intended for caregivers and direct support staff, this course uses clear, accessible language and practical examples to empower staff to foster safe, supportive, and healing environments for youth. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to actively contribute to a positive treatment environment, address challenges constructively, and support the emotional and social development of youth in their care.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods will include the use of multiple video presentations, ebook, and PDF accompanying question/answer sections. Upon completion of the course, key points and references are available in a PDF format for students to refer to post-class and use in their business. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of each course.

Method of Course Evaluation by Participants: 

There will be a required course evaluation form before a certificate is awarded.

Method of Evaluating Participants:

For each credit hour, there will be 4 quizzes consisting of 5 questions each pertaining to the testing of knowledge of the module.
