Life Skills Development and Independent Living Preparation
This course is designed for group home caregivers and direct care staff who support youth in residential settings. It provides practical guidance and hands-on strategies to help young people develop the essential life skills needed for successful independent living. The training focuses on real-world situations, such as managing money, preparing meals, maintaining a clean living space, and organizing daily routines. Caregivers will learn how to assess each youth’s current abilities, create personalized skill-building plans, and use everyday opportunities to teach and reinforce these skills.
The course also covers job readiness, including how to help youth write resumes, practice interview skills, and understand basic workplace expectations. Emphasis is placed on building confidence, promoting autonomy, and respecting each youth’s background and preferences. Caregivers will explore ways to set achievable goals, celebrate progress, and gradually increase responsibility in a supportive environment. By the end of this training, participants will be better equipped to foster independence, self-advocacy, and lifelong skills in the youth they serve, all while meeting California Title 22 requirements and best practices for group home care.
