Group Therapy Support and Facilitation

This course equips direct care staff in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs) with essential skills to effectively support and facilitate group therapy sessions for youth. Designed specifically for caregivers, the training focuses on understanding group dynamics, supporting licensed therapists during group sessions, and facilitating therapeutic activities that foster peer support and social skill development. Participants will learn practical strategies to manage challenging group behaviors, maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, and reinforce therapeutic concepts in daily interactions with youth.

The course emphasizes the unique role of caregivers in STRTP settings, highlighting how they can bridge the gap between formal therapy and daily living by modeling healthy communication, encouraging participation, and supporting the application of group insights in real-world situations. By grounding instruction in current California Title 22 regulations and federal standards, this training ensures compliance while remaining accessible and relevant to the daily responsibilities of direct care staff. Whether assisting with therapist-led groups or leading peer-focused activities, caregivers will gain confidence in fostering a supportive group environment that promotes growth, safety, and positive relationships among youth.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods will include the use of multiple video presentations, ebook, and PDF accompanying question/answer sections. Upon completion of the course, key points and references are available in a PDF format for students to refer to post-class and use in their business. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of each course.

Method of Course Evaluation by Participants: 

There will be a required course evaluation form before a certificate is awarded.

Method of Evaluating Participants:

For each credit hour, there will be 4 quizzes consisting of 5 questions each pertaining to the testing of knowledge of the module.
