Documentation and Clinical Communication

This course is designed for direct care staff working in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs) in California. It provides practical training on accurate documentation and professional clinical communication, both of which are essential for supporting youth in therapeutic residential settings. Participants will learn how to record behavioral observations objectively, complete required incident and progress reports, and maintain compliance with legal and ethical standards, including HIPAA and Title 22 regulations.

The course emphasizes the importance of clear, factual, and timely documentation to support clinical review, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary team coordination. Real-world scenarios and practical exercises will help caregivers develop confidence in writing objective notes, reporting incidents, and sharing information appropriately while maintaining confidentiality. By the end of this course, direct care staff will be better equipped to support the therapeutic process, ensure resident safety, and meet regulatory requirements in their daily work.
