Dementia Care Fundamentals Understanding and Supporting Cognitive Changes 

This course equips caregivers in Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) with foundational knowledge and practical skills for supporting residents experiencing dementia and cognitive decline. Designed specifically for direct care staff, the training focuses on recognizing the early and ongoing signs of dementia, understanding the progression of cognitive changes, and responding with empathy and professionalism. Caregivers will learn to apply person-centered care strategies that prioritize the dignity, safety, and comfort of residents.

The course emphasizes effective communication techniques to reduce confusion and agitation, as well as hands-on approaches for managing challenging behaviors with compassion. Environmental modifications and de-escalation strategies are explored to create supportive, safe, and engaging living spaces for residents with memory impairments. All content is aligned with the latest California Title 22 caregiver requirements and integrates federal best practices, ensuring compliance and practical relevance for everyday caregiving tasks.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods will include the use of multiple video presentations, ebook, and PDF accompanying question/answer sections. Upon completion of the course, key points and references are available in a PDF format for students to refer to post-class and use in their business. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of each course.

Method of Course Evaluation by Participants: 

There will be a required course evaluation form before a certificate is awarded.

For each credit hour, there will be 4 quizzes consisting of 5 questions each pertaining to the testing of knowledge of the module.
