Adolescent Development and Mental Health Awareness

This course provides direct care staff in group homes with essential knowledge and practical skills to support the mental health and healthy development of adolescents. Caregivers will learn to identify the difference between typical adolescent behaviors and signs that may indicate mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, and substance use. The course emphasizes a trauma-informed, person-centered approach that respects each youth’s dignity and autonomy, while promoting positive identity and self-esteem. Staff will gain practical communication strategies to build trust and encourage open dialogue, as well as tools to help adolescents develop emotional regulation and healthy coping skills. Designed for caregivers working in California group homes, the course aligns with current Title 22 requirements and is relevant for all residential care settings serving youth. By the end of this training, participants will feel more confident and prepared to recognize early warning signs, respond appropriately, and support the emotional well-being and resilience of adolescents in their care.
