Elder abuse is a pressing concern in senior care facilities. As an RCFE administrator, understanding how to prevent, identify, and report abuse is essential to protecting residents and maintaining compliance with state laws.
Elder abuse can take many forms, including:
Physical Abuse: Inflicting harm or injury.
Emotional Abuse: Verbal threats or neglect.
Financial Exploitation: Misusing a resident’s funds or assets.
Conduct Background Checks: Screen all staff thoroughly during the hiring process.
Educate Staff: Provide training on identifying and preventing abuse.
Create a Reporting System: Establish a confidential system for residents and staff to report concerns.
Foster Open Communication: Encourage residents and families to voice concerns without fear of retaliation.
Under Title 22, administrators are required to report suspected abuse promptly to Adult Protective Services (APS) or local law enforcement. Failing to do so can result in severe penalties and harm to residents.
