Educational Support in Therapeutic Settings

This course is designed for direct care staff working in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs) in California, focusing on supporting the educational needs of youth receiving therapeutic services. The training emphasizes the critical connection between mental health and academic performance, equipping caregivers with practical skills to help youth succeed in school while addressing their therapeutic goals. Participants will learn how to recognize and respond to educational challenges, including school refusal and resistance, and how to implement accommodations outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and treatment plans.

The course also covers strategies for creating supportive study environments, motivating youth with learning barriers, and effectively coordinating with educational professionals to ensure consistency and continuity of care. By the end of this course, caregivers will be prepared to foster a positive, person-centered learning atmosphere that respects each youth’s unique needs and supports their overall well-being and academic progress.
