Embracing Diversity: Providing Inclusive Care for LGBT Older Adults

This 2-hour online/self-paced course is designed to meet the requirements toward the recertification of Administrator Certification for RCFE. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the Cultural Competency And Sensitivity To Aging LGBT Community. The course will impress upon the learner the importance of providing respectful, inclusive care to LGBT older adults, understanding the unique challenges they face, and promoting care equality. We will focus on how participants themselves can do to create a welcoming environment and advocate for LGBT older adults in their business.

Important Notice: To comply with California Administrator Continuing Education Requirements, it is mandatory to complete the full required time for each section in order to receive credit.

Course Objectives

The course is structured into four modules:
  • Introduction to LGBTQ+ Aging and Inclusive Language Includes an overview of LGBTQ+ aging, the importance of cultural competency, and the proper use and misuse of pronouns.
  • Challenges Faced by LGBTQ+ Older Adults
    Examines discrimination, social isolation, and provides an historical context for the marginalization of LGBTQ+ seniors.
  • Promoting Care Quality
    Focuses on strategies for providing culturally competent care, highlighting health equity and the rights of LGBTQ+ residents in long-term care.
  • Putting It Into Practice
    Offers practical tools and guidance on implementing LGBTQ+ cultural competency within RCFE settings, including a sample intake form for LGBTQ+ residents.
The course includes quizzes after each module to reinforce learning.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods will include the use of multiple video presentations, ebook, and PDF accompanying question/answer sections. Upon completion of the course, key points and references are available in a PDF format for students to refer to post-class and use in their business. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of each course.

There will be a required course evaluation form before a certificate is awarded.

For each credit hour, there will be 4 quizzes consisting of 5 questions each pertaining to the testing of knowledge of the module.
